Lichen Walk & Workshop

You’re invited to join FBC at Simon Trail in Lamoine to learn all about Lichen!

Join Maine Master Naturalist, Nicholas Noyes on a Lichen Nature Walk and be introduced to the amazing world of Lichens, which we will find on trees, stumps, rocks, and on the ground as we explore Simon Trail!

We will begin with a tailgate workshop before entering the woods, as Nicholas familiarizes participants with the glossary of terms used to describe lichens. Using these descriptions, eye piece magnifiers, and photographs of lichens, we will learn to recognize the four basic types of lichens and learn their typical identifying features. Then, as we walk through the forest, we will examine several of the common lichens found in the Maine woods. We will examine and highlight those physical and reproductive features which assist in more detailed identification of the lichens we find.
Registration is required and limited: The event is free and open to the public, all are welcome, but please fill out one registration form per participant.
Trail & Event Length: The walk will follow the Simon Trail 1 mile loop and finish in approximately 1.5 to 2 hrs. The walking is generally flat with some roots and wet areas, and we will stay close to the path.

Participants should bring:
Sturdy / waterproof shoes, warm layers for September weather, bug / tick repellent,  a notebook if you’d like to take notes and plenty of water!

We will provide: Descriptive materials, as well as the loan of photographs of typical lichens and eye piece magnifiers to aid in viewing the smallest parts of the lichens that we find along the trail.
