Volunteer Event: Community Tree Planting
The Ellsworth Garden Club, Frenchman Bay Conservancy, and Green Ellsworth are inviting the public to join in planting over 80 new trees in the Community Tree Nursery at Jordan Homestead Preserve.
The volunteer tree planting will mark the beginning of Maine Arbor Week, which runs from May 21-27.
The tree nursery is an important step toward achieving the Ellsworth Green Plan goal of renewing and enhancing Ellsworth’s tree canopy along city streets and in public parks. It allows for the purchase of smaller, more affordable trees that can then grow and become acclimated to Ellsworth’s climate before being permanently planted around the city. This will increase the trees’ chances of survival and success. The tree nursery also provides educational opportunities for local residents to learn about proper care and planting of trees, as well as the mitigating effect trees have on climate change and air pollution.
Participants in the planting should wear sturdy footwear and bring shovels if they have them. For more information, to contribute to our re-treeing effort, or to sign up to participate contact Mary Blackstone at 667-8878 or blackstm@uregina.ca.
