Activities

Finding ways to be in nature more often is important to us, and to our community. FBC strives to make nature accessible to everyone.

We welcome individuals of all abilities, backgrounds, and ages, and are committed to creating more opportunities for people with mobility challenges to access the benefits of spending time outdoors. Explore this page for self-guided activities, online learning, and more.

Hiking 101 for Beginners

If you’re new to hiking, an FBC trail is a great place to start! We have a few relatively flat trails that provide beautiful water views. We recommend checking out: Jordan Homestead Trail in Ellsworth, Little Tunk Pond in Sullivan, or Taft Point in Gouldsboro.

Remember to:

  • Wear sturdy shoes
  • Bring a water bottle
  • Remember your sunscreen and bug spray
  • Always tell a friend your hiking plans, just in case!

Dogs are welcome to explore our preserves, too!

For dog-parents, we know that exploring with our four-legged best friends can make the experience even more rewarding. Please respect our guidelines:

  1. Respect leash rules, where mandated. Although many FBC preserves allow off-leash dogs under voice control, a few properties have important habitats that require protection from our frolicking friends.
  2. Scoop the poop! Natural ecosystems are designed to process and degrade the scat produced by local wildlife, but not necessarily every neighborhood dog. Consider your dog’s waste as a part of your ‘Leave No Trace’ principles.
